Air + Water + Earth = Spirit
Laurel Izard + John Lamping
Izard and Lamping found themselves presented with a dilemma. How can one improve upon perfection? Nature embodies the beauty and voice of the universe and perhaps our best efforts are to simply focus attention on what nature presents us. In this vein the seven banners at their site seek to represent the spiritual elements that come together at the pond; water, earth, air, and the animal and plants present there. Not unlike the prayer flags of Tibet, which let the wind carry the blessings written on them to the universe, these banners represent a human voice thanking and blessing nature. The spiritual writings are encoded in ancient scripts, and while the translations are provided for the viewer, it is the artist's understanding that these spiritual whisperings are still heard by the heart. It is their hope that on a cognitive or heart level the viewer may experience a sense of oneness with earth, sky, and the voice of sprit.
